This an exclusive tour to a working Cattle ranch which also encompasses some of the best Indian Artifacts. This ranch was part of the famous Hashknife Cattle Company from the 1880’s. (Zane Gray’s book Hashknife Outfit) The ranch itself contains one of the finest pioneer, cowboy and Anasazi Indian museums in the Southwest. The museum includes hundreds of artifacts of Southwestern life. This collection is show cased with one of the largest private collection of Indian Pottery. Within this display of Pottery there are examples of Hopi, Navajo, Zuni, Roosevelt and even Anasazi.
Leaving the museum you will travel across this 10,000 acre ranch to discover a Native Americans built a rock corral and rock house (1,000 year old). This rock house is located on Chimney Canyon. You will hear the history of how the U.S. Calvary camped just before going into the last battle with the Apache Indians at Apache Butte. At this site you will also be treated to an original Navajo Hogan. (round house)
Our next stop is an actual untouched ancient Native American site for your viewing. You will notice the ancient Fire Boxes left by the Indian some 1,000 years ago. At this site your guide will also lead you to a rare petroglyph that is also a Map. Very few petroglyphs of Maps were ever found in the Southwest.
Chevelon Canyon is the center of the rock art at the ranch. Visiting Chevelon Canyon you will encounter many of the oldest Anasazi petroglyphs in the Southwest. These petroglyphs have been dated to be over 5,000 years. Many of the petroglyphs are unique to this canyon only. We are not talking about a few petroglyphs but we are talking about over 4,000 of these rock drawings. The anthologists from Flagstaff visited the Ranch 8 years ago to validate these beautiful drawings. They had figured that they would take 4 to 5 months to identify all the drawings in the Canyon. They spent 5 years recording all these drawings. We have over 20 tribes represented in this canyon. One of these magnificent petroglyphs is called the Hopi Woman. It is a woman giving Birth! Many of the rock drawing in this canyon are unique to Chevelon Canyon. Chevelon Canyon is now on the National Register of Rock Art. Many of our customers have expressed that their trip to Rock Art Ranch was the Highlight of their vacation.
